US President Donald Trump told Axios he does not believe Hamas would currently agree to a hostage release and ceasefire in Gaza, while avoiding a direct endorsement or rejection of Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu’s recently approved plan to capture Gaza City.

In a short phone interview with the outlet, Trump said he shared Netanyahu’s view “that more military pressure on Hamas is required,” according to Axios.

He added that Israel must determine its own course of action in Gaza, including whether to permit Hamas to remain there, while making clear his belief that “they can’t stay there.”

Trump described his Sunday conversation with Netanyahu — which focused on the Gaza City operation — as a “good call.”

“I have one thing to say: remember October 7, remember October 7,” Trump told Axios, invoking Hamas’s 2023 massacre and echoing Netanyahu’s warning in two press conferences the night before that “there are those who have forgotten October 7.”
