President Donald Trump appeared uncertain about Israel’s airstrikes in Gaza on Sunday during a press exchange en route to Washington, deferring comment on their justification amid the fragile U.S.-brokered ceasefire.
The strikes targeted Hamas terror positions in northern Gaza after Hamas terrorists killed two IDF soldiers near Rafah. Israel called it a response to a “blatant violation” of the truce, signed just days ago in Egypt as part of President Trump’s peace plan, which included hostage releases, phased IDF withdrawals from Gaza, and Hamas disarmament.
Pressed by a reporter on the flight back to Washington, Trump was shaky on Israel’s right to defend it self:
- REPORTER: “Do you feel Israel was justified with striking when it did?”
- TRUMP: “Striking where?”
- REPORTER: “In Gaza. Today. And overnight.”
- TRUMP: “I’d have to get back to you on that.”
