U.S. President Donald Trump met with Syrian interim President Ahmed al-Sharaa ahead of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) summit in Riyadh, a White House official confirmed. The meeting marked the first encounter between leaders of the two nations in 25 years and came just one day after Trump made a surprise announcement to lift all U.S. sanctions on Syria.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan joined the session via video call, and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman was also in attendance, according to Turkey’s Anadolu news agency. Erdogan described the sanctions-lifting decision as “of historic importance,” Anadolu reported.

During the meeting, Trump urged President al-Sharaa to join the Abraham Accords with Israel. A White House spokesperson noted that Trump also asked the Syrian leader to “deport Palestinian terrorists” and “to help the United States to prevent the resurgence of ISIS.”

Trump later shared more details about the exchange with reporters aboard Air Force One, saying:

“I told him [Sharaa], I hope you’re going to join [the Abraham Accords] once you’re straightened out and he said yes. But they have a lot of work to do.”

He further expressed a long-standing desire for regional normalization and peace, including hopes that Saudi Arabia will eventually join the Abraham Accords:
“It was my dream for Saudi Arabia to join the Abraham Accords, but I know they’ll do it in their own time,” Trump said.

During a broader session of the GCC led by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Trump addressed regional concerns over Iran:

“Iran must stop sponsoring terror, halt its bloody proxy wars, and permanently and verifiably cease pursuit of nuclear weapons,” Trump said.

“They cannot have a nuclear weapon.”
He added that he was ready to make a deal with Tehran, but only under strict conditions:
“I urgently want to make a deal,” Trump told the Gulf leaders, “but they have to stop their support of proxy groups throughout the region.”
