President Trump is expected to meet with Gulf leaders next Tuesday on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York to discuss the next phase of the war with Iran, according to three people with direct knowledge of the plans who spoke to Axios.

The meeting is expected to focus on American proposals for a postwar strategy. Mr. Trump and his senior advisers are developing a plan for the period after the conflict, which is expected to be completed after the midterm elections.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel is also seeking a meeting with Mr. Trump in New York, though no such meeting has been scheduled, an Israeli official said.

At last year’s General Assembly, President Trump met with leaders from eight Arab and Muslim nations and shared a draft of his Gaza peace plan. He presented the proposal publicly the following week, and an agreement to end the war was reached soon afterward.

The Gulf nations, which host American military bases, endured major Iranian attacks during the conflict. They also suffered significant economic damage as disruptions to oil and natural gas exports rippled through the region.

President Trump said Wednesday that “hopefully we are towards the end of the war.” He repeated his claim that Iran was interested in reaching a deal, saying the United States had received that message directly from Iranian sources.

The meeting is expected to include leaders or foreign ministers from the six countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council: Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Bahrain, Kuwait and Oman. The White House declined to comment.

The State Department issued initial invitations on Wednesday. One person familiar with the plans said the gathering could be expanded to include additional Arab and Muslim leaders.
