President Trump said today that the U.S. is “very satisfied” with Syria’s recent progress and praised new Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa for his “hard work and determination” to rebuild the country.
Trump said his decision to end “very strong and biting sanctions” was “truly appreciated by Syria, its leadership, and its people,” and that Washington is helping ensure Syria “evolves into a prosperous state.”

He also asked Israel to maintain a “strong and true dialogue” with Syria, saying both countries can now build a “long and prosperous relationship” and a “historic opportunity” for Middle East peace.
The message came as President Sharaa met in Damascus with U.S. Special Envoy Tom Barrack, alongside Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shaibani, where the two sides discussed “the latest developments in the region and issues of common interest,” further showing Washington’s renewed engagement with Damascus.
The developments follow an Israeli raid in southern Syria on Friday, where Syria said 13 people were killed in what it called a “criminal attack,” while the IDF said its troops came under fire in Beit Jinn during an operation to arrest two Al-Jama’a Al-Islamiya terrorists. Six Israeli soldiers were wounded, three severely, after gunmen opened fire as the soldiers left the suspects’ home.
