As Israel’s security cabinet prepared to meet Sunday on the war in Gaza, Channel 12 reported that US President Donald Trump is pressing Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to swiftly bring Hamas to defeat, after losing confidence in ceasefire and hostage negotiations.

According to sources cited by the Hebrew outlet, Trump’s pressure intensified following the January hostage-ceasefire deal and the May release of American-Israeli captive Edan Alexander. Since then, Trump has been urging Netanyahu to move more quickly toward a final military victory over Hamas.

The report said Trump’s position is a key factor behind Netanyahu’s push for either a complete military takeover of Gaza or a far-reaching agreement imposed on Hamas under Israeli conditions, despite opposition from some Israeli defense officials.

Channel 12 added that Trump believes Hamas can be defeated decisively, “perhaps even within two weeks.” While he continues to speak publicly about freeing hostages, the president has concluded privately that Hamas will never release all of them, instead holding on to some as leverage for its survival.

In July, when Hamas returned to talks and Qatari mediators voiced optimism, Trump publicly echoed that sentiment, backing his envoy Steve Witkoff and Netanyahu in pursuing a renewed deal. But when Hamas hardened its stance amid global criticism of Gaza’s humanitarian crisis, Trump reportedly “lost patience,” having placed weight on Qatari assurances that later proved baseless.

At that point, Netanyahu also declared negotiations over, withdrawing the Israeli team from Doha. Even when Hamas presented a new proposal two weeks ago, Witkoff refused to reengage, saying he no longer trusted the Qataris and would not risk putting Trump in a politically embarrassing position, Channel 12 reported.
