President Trump on Monday signed an executive order restricting federal funding for “gain-of-function” research, believes by many scientists as responsible for the pandemic.
The type of research involves genetically manipulating viruses, bacteria, or other pathogens to render them more dangerous and infectious. The goal is to be able to predict and prepare for situations in which the micro-organisms may naturally become more virulent in the future.
The research is very controversal. Many scientists say that GofF viruses in a Wuhan, China lab were accidentally released in early 2020, causing the worldwide Covid-19 pandemic.
Dr. Anthony Fauci, who was director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases from 1984 to 2022, and medical advisor to then-President Joe Biden from 2021 to 2022, was an early advocate of GofF research, describing it “a risk worth taking.”
The problem is, there has been virtually no evidence over the years that GofF research has yielded any preventive measures or treatments of viral infections.
Physician Laura Kahn, a biodefense expert, said that as far as she knows, GofF research “has not directly led to vaccines or therapeutics.”
Trump’s executive order stops all present and future federal funding of gain-of-function research in countries deemed to have a lack of enough oversight of the research. The order also enables U.S. agencies to block federal funding of any other biological research that might pose a threat to American public health and safety or national security.
