President Donald Trump said there are ways for him to run for a 3rd term, in remarks made during a Sunday interview with NBC.
Despite the 22nd Amendment of the Constitution barring a president from running more than 2 terms, Trump stated that there were ways to achieve it and emphasized that he was “not joking.”
“Many people want me to do it,” Trump said during the interview, referring to his supporters. “But I usually tell them that there’s still a long way to go. You know, it’s very early in the administration.”
Trump continued, “Right now, I’m focused on the present,” marking some of his most detailed remarks yet about the idea of serving beyond two terms.
When asked if he wanted to run again, the former president replied, “I enjoy working.”
“I’m not joking,” Trump reiterated when pressed for clarification. “But I’m not—it’s way too early to think about it.”
When questioned about whether he had been presented with possible ways to secure a third term, Trump responded, “There are ways you could do it.”
NBC News brought up a potential scenario in which Vice President JD Vance could run for office and then transfer power to Trump. “That’s one,” Trump acknowledged.
“But there are other ways, too,” he added.
When asked to name another possible method, Trump replied “No.”
Changing the Constitution to remove the two-term restriction would be a significant challenge, requiring either a two-thirds majority in Congress or approval from two-thirds of state legislatures to call a constitutional convention. Any amendment would then need to be ratified by three-quarters of the states.
Trump has previously mentioned the possibility of running again, though many Republicans have dismissed these remarks as jokes or an attempt to provoke his critics.
Representative Andy Ogles, a Republican from Tennessee, has introduced a resolution advocating for the extension of presidential term limits, which would allow Trump to run again.
Meanwhile, Trump ally Steve Bannon expressed confidence in an interview with News Nation that Trump would “run and win again in 2028.” In the same discussion, Bannon suggested that “there will be a couple of different options” for how Trump might pursue a third term despite the current constitutional limits.
The White House has further amplified Trump’s remarks comparing himself to royalty by posting an image of a fictional magazine cover depicting him wearing a crown.
