President Donald Trump signed an executive order Saturday enshrining English as the official language of the United States, a first in American history

The order will reverse a mandate issued by former president Bill Clinton which requires government agencies to offer services to clients in different languages. Under Trump’s new law, agencies can choose to keep that policy, or only use English.

“A nationally designated language is at the core of a unified and cohesive society, and the United States is strengthened by a citizenry that can freely exchange ideas in one shared language,” Trump wrote in the order.
