The White House has released an executive order from U.S. President Donald Trump declaring that any armed attack on Qatar will be considered “a threat to the peace and security of the United States.”

The move marks a significant American pledge to protect an Arab state, coming three weeks after an Israeli strike in Doha targeted Hamas leaders, sparking anger from Qatar and criticism from Trump.

Following the strike, Trump assured Qatar’s leadership that such an incident would not be repeated. Earlier this week, he convinced Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to issue an apology to the Qatari emir.

The order is also tied to Trump’s broader plan to end the war in Gaza. Doha has welcomed the initiative, while Netanyahu has signaled acceptance.

“In the event of such an attack, the United States shall take all lawful and appropriate measures — including diplomatic, economic, and, if necessary, military — to defend the interests of the United States and of the State of Qatar and to restore peace and stability,” the order states.

It further instructs senior U.S. officials to ensure “a rapid and coordinated response to any foreign aggression against the State of Qatar.”

The U.S. maintains a major military base in Qatar, which was struck by Iran earlier this year.

In addition to the security commitment, the order highlights Qatar’s ongoing role as a mediator in efforts to secure a ceasefire in Gaza. “The secretary of state shall continue to partner with the state of Qatar as and when appropriate for conflict resolution and mediation in recognition of the state of Qatar‘s extensive diplomatic and mediation experience,” it says.
