In a blistering series of remarks delivered ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, President Donald Trump ripped into Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker, calling the Democrat a “big fat slob” while asserting that his administration could eradicate crime in Chicago in a matter of weeks if given federal authority to intervene.
Trump argued that the city’s leadership is failing, citing recent violence as justification for a federal takeover of local policing duties.
“We have a governor that thinks it’s wonderful that only like seven people were killed this week,” Trump said. “But we are moving toward…and we’re going to if crime gets it’s horrible.”
“We could make Chicago a safe city in a period of four weeks, in a period of eight weeks, nine weeks, 10 weeks, it would be totally safe,” Trump said. “And the people of Chicago want us to go there.”
Trump drew parallels to his administration’s actions in other regions, claiming a track record of instant success. “We’ll do the same thing as we did in DC, the same thing as we did everywhere we’ve gone. It’s become almost instantly safe. And I want to do it in Chicago.”
Trump hurled vitriol at Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson and, more aggressively, Governor Pritzker.
“It’s on the front page of every newspaper. It’s out of control,” Trump said of the crime rate. “The mayor is incompetent and the governor is a big fat slob.”
Trump suggested that the only barrier to a safer Chicago was Pritzker’s refusal to request federal help. “He ought to invite us in say, please make Chicago safe. We’re going to lose a great city if we don’t do it quickly,” Trump warned, addressing the Governor directly: “So Governor Pritzker, if you’re listening, let’s get your act together. Invite us in.”
Speaking tongue-in-cheek, Trump said he refused to mock Pritzker’s physical appearance before making fun of his weight. He noted that speechwriters had prepared a joke about the Governor’s weight, which he claimed he would not use.
“I was going to talk about Pritzker in size, but when I talk about Pritzker, I get angry because he’s not letting us do the job. So I’m not going to tell my Pritzker joke,” Trump said.
“They have a very cute little joke. You know, some speech writer wrote some joke about his weight, but I would never want to talk about his weight. I don’t talk about people being fat. I refuse to talk about the fact that he’s a fat slob.”
“I’d like to lose a few pounds too, by the way,” Trump admitted. “And I’m not going to lose it on Thanksgiving. I can tell you that, because I’m going to have a turkey.”
