The White House announced Wednesday that it would be doubling tariffs on Indian imports.
“I find that the Government of India is currently directly or indirectly importing Russian Federation oil,” President Donald Trump declared in an executive order.
The order continues: “Accordingly, and as consistent with applicable law, articles of India imported into the customs territory of the United States shall be subject to an additional ad valorem rate of duty of 25 percent.”
US President Donald Trump met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Oval Office earlier this year.
This new tariff, adding to an earlier 25% levy, will bring the total duties on Indian goods to 50%. The initial 25% tariff will go into effect Thursday, while the new increase is scheduled to kick in 21 days later.
The move places India among the nations facing the highest U.S. trade penalties, a reflection of Trump’s escalating campaign against countries he says are helping fund Russia’s war in Ukraine.
The executive order also instructs administration officials to investigate whether other nations are importing Russian oil, either directly or through intermediaries, and to advise Trump on possible penalties for those countries as well.
Last week, Trump initially announced a 25% tariff on Indian goods and hinted at an additional “penalty” over India’s ongoing purchases of military and energy supplies from Russia. Until now, it was unclear what form that penalty would take.
On Tuesday, Trump made his intentions clear, warning that he planned to raise tariffs on India “very substantially over the next 24 hours, because they’re buying Russian oil, they’re fueling the war machine.”
“And if they’re going to do that, then I’m not going to be happy,” Trump said during an appearance on CNBC’s Squawk Box.
In response, India has pushed back on the accusation, accusing the U.S. and EU of hypocrisy. India’s Ministry of External Affairs said Monday, “it is revealing that the very nations criticizing India are themselves indulging in trade with Russia.”
“Unlike our case, such trade is not even a vital national compulsion [for them],” the statement added.
