President Donald Trump predicted a “civil” discussion ahead of his Friday Oval Office meeting with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, but the democratic socialist’s ascent continues to unsettle lawmakers and fuel concerns about the direction of America’s largest city.
Speaking on a radio interview Friday morning, Trump noted only Mamdani’s “different philosophy” without ripping into his Marxism; he also credited him for a successful campaign. The president said he hoped both men could “get along fine,” even hinting the meeting, initially closed to the press, could be opened to reporters.
Even in Congress, where Democrats continue to downplay GOP warnings, unease is spreading. Members privately acknowledge that Mamdani’s victory has exposed ideological fractures within their party with both his socialism and extreme anti Israel rhetoric, especially among moderates in New York’s suburbs.
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries, attempting to set a calmer tone, said he “hopes” Trump approaches the meeting with respect and said the mayor-elect plans to discuss affordability and public safety; the very areas where critics say Mamdani’s positions are most troubling.
Jeffries confirmed speaking with Mamdani on Thursday as part of the mayor-elect’s preparation for the Oval Office session, but Friday’s statements did little to reassure those who argue the new administration in City Hall will be defined by activism rather than governance.
Republicans, meanwhile, say Trump’s willingness to meet politely should not obscure the stakes. They argue Mamdani represents precisely the shift to the far left that the House condemned hours earlier when it passed a new resolution denouncing socialism — with moderate Democrats breaking ranks to support it.
