President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he will meet with New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani at the White House on Friday, a surprise move following a mayoral campaign in which the President vehemently opposed the democratic socialist and threatened to slash the city’s federal funding.
The meeting, scheduled for November 21 in the Oval Office, was confirmed in a statement from the President, who referred to Mamdani, a self- described democratic socialist who has expressed a desire to, in Marxist language, “seize the means of production,” as a communist.
“Communist Mayor of New York City, Zohran ‘Kwame’ Mamdani, has asked for a meeting,” the President wrote. “We have agreed that this meeting will take place at the Oval Office on Friday, November 21st. Further details to follow!”
The scheduling of a sit-down marks a distinct shift in tone from the previous weeks.
Speculation regarding a potential meeting had intensified earlier this week after the President told reporters on Sunday that Mamdani “would like to meet with us” and that his administration would “work something out.”
Throughout the recent New York City mayoral race, President Trump broke with tradition to endorse former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent, rather than a Republican candidate. Trump aggressively campaigned against Mamdani, warning voters that his victory would result in immediate financial repercussions for the city.
“If Communist Candidate Zohran Mamdani wins… it is highly unlikely that I will be contributing Federal Funds, other than the very minimum as required,” Trump posted days before the election.
Mamdani, who defeated Cuomo and Republican Curtis Sliwa earlier this month, has previously stated his intention to challenge the President’s policies.
