US President Donald Trump is scheduled to sit down with Qatar’s prime minister in New York on Friday, a White House official confirmed to the Times of Israel, days after Israel targeted Hamas leaders in the Qatari capital.

The official offered no details on the timing or agenda of Trump’s meeting with Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani.

Israel launched an airstrike in Doha on Tuesday in an attempt to eliminate Hamas’s political leadership.

Trump criticized the strike in Qatar, while also stating that removing Hamas’s senior figures is a “worthy goal.” Hamas has maintained that none of its leaders were killed in the assault.

According to Politico, Trump’s aides have become increasingly uneasy with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

Qatar is viewed by Washington as a key Gulf ally and has been a central mediator in talks aimed at halting the Gaza war, freeing hostages held there, and laying out a postwar framework for the enclave.

Al-Thani on Tuesday accused Israel of attempting to sabotage peace prospects but said Qatar would persist in its mediation role.

The Qatari premier is also set to meet US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, the State Department announced Thursday.
