US President Donald Trump is set to launch a major shift in policy toward Ukraine, introducing what insiders are calling an “aggressive” new strategy to provide offensive weapons to Kyiv, Axios reported Monday, citing two sources familiar with the matter.
The report signals a sharp departure from Trump’s earlier, more cautious posture on arming Ukraine. While the White House has not yet commented on the report, Trump himself confirmed a key part of the new approach in public remarks: the US will be sending Patriot missile systems to Ukraine, with the European Union covering the cost.
“We will send them Patriots, which they desperately need, because Putin really surprised a lot of people,” Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews. “He talks nice and then bombs everybody in the evening. But there’s a little bit of a problem there. I don’t like it.”
Although Trump did not specify how many Patriot systems would be delivered, he emphasized that the weapons would be fully reimbursed. “We basically are going to send them various pieces of very sophisticated military equipment. They are going to pay us 100% for that, and that’s the way we want it,” he said.
Trump’s frustration with Russian President Vladimir Putin appears to be mounting. Sources say Putin has refused to engage seriously with US efforts to broker a ceasefire, leading to Trump’s shift in tone and policy.
The announcement comes amid ongoing requests from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for more advanced air defense systems, as Russia continues its daily missile and drone strikes across the country.
Trump is expected to meet NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte later this week to discuss further steps on Ukraine and broader security issues.
