President Donald Trump issued a stern warning regarding the strategic U.S. military base on the island of Diego Garcia, asserting that he will “NEVER allow” the site to be undermined.
Following discussions with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer regarding the deal to hand over sovereignty of the Chagos Islands – located in the Central Indian Ocean, where the base is located – to Mauritius, President Trump made it clear that American military interests must remain protected.
While Trump acknowledged that the deal Prime Minister Starmer made was likely “the best he could make,” he issued a direct warning regarding the 99-year lease agreement that allows the U.S. to maintain its base.
“If the lease deal, sometime in the future, ever falls apart, or anyone threatens or endangers U.S. operations and forces at our Base, I retain the right to Militarily secure and reinforce the American presence in Diego Garcia,” Trump declared in a statement.
The President emphasized the “great importance” of the base to U.S. National Security, noting its location in the middle of the Indian Ocean is vital for military staging.
Reports highlight that Diego Garcia is a crucial outpost for projecting air and naval power into the Middle East and East Africa, as well as for U.S. Space Force operations. Critics of the transfer deal have raised concerns over Mauritius’ growing ties with China, fearing Beijing could gain a foothold in the region.
President Trump concluded his statement by dismissing potential challenges to the base.
“Let it be known that I will never allow our presence on a Base as important as this to ever be undermined or threatened by fake claims or environmental nonsense,” he stated.
