President Donald Trump on Thursday suspended tariffs on products covered by a trade deal he signed in his first term, accounting for about half of all imports from Mexico and 62% of those from Canada, according to a White House official who spoke with the BBC.

The exemptions will expire on April 2, coinciding with Trump’s plan to institute reciprocal tariffs on all US trade partners. .

Thursday’s suspension was the second walk-back this week; on Wednesday, he paused tariffs on steel and aluminum, in an effort to support the automotive industry. These tariffs will come back into force on March 12.

Canada and Mexico are both top exporters of the metals to U.S. markets.

All products covered by North America’s free trade agreement, the US-Mexico-Canada agreement (USMCA) , which Trump signed during his first term, will be exempt from tariffs for the time being.
