Two teenagers, one of them a Russian national, have been taken into custody in Paris on suspicion of planning an antisemitic attack, according to judicial sources and media reports.
The Russian teen, a 16-year-old Chechen who arrived in France with his mother four years ago, reportedly sent a WhatsApp photo showing himself holding a knife, declaring that he was “going to kill Jews in five days,” Le Parisien reported.
He was allegedly in communication with the other 16-year-old, who resides in the Paris region, and threatened to attack a religious site, the newspaper added.
Confirming the media accounts, France’s national anti-terror prosecutor’s office told AFP that the two had been charged with “participation in a terrorist criminal association with the aim of preparing one or more crimes against persons.”
So far in 2025, France has charged 20 minors with terrorism-related offenses, with prosecutors noting a rise in young people being implicated in such plots over the past five years.
The detention of these two teenagers pushes this year’s total above the 19 minors charged with terrorism-related crimes across all of 2024.
