U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier to stay in the Middle East for an additional week, maintaining the presence of two carrier strike groups in the region to continue operations against Houthi forces in Yemen, according to a U.S. official who spoke with Reuters Friday.

In March, Hegseth extended the Truman’s mission by a month to support an expanded campaign of airstrikes against the Iran-aligned Houthi rebels. The latest extension, signed on Thursday, will keep the Truman in the region before it returns to Norfolk, Virginia.

Officials say the extension came at the request of Gen. Erik Kurilla, head of U.S. Central Command. The USS Carl Vinson, stationed in San Diego, recently arrived and is now operating in the Gulf of Aden.

The Truman is currently stationed in the Red Sea alongside two destroyers and a cruiser that make up its strike group.
