British counterterrorism authorities announced that two men have been charged with membership in the Iran-backed terror group Hezbollah and with attending terrorist training camps in Lebanon.
Police said the suspects were initially arrested at their London homes in April and were taken back into custody last week, when prosecutors filed a total of nine terrorism-related charges against them.
According to the charges, Annis Makki, 40, is accused of attending a terrorist training camp at the Birket Jabbour airbase in Lebanon in 2021, taking part in preparations for terrorist acts, holding membership in Hezbollah, and publicly expressing support for both Hezbollah and Hamas terrorists.
Mohamed Hadi, 33, is similarly charged with belonging to Hezbollah and with attending terror training camps in Baffliyeh in southern Lebanon in 2015, as well as at the Birket Jabbour airbase in 2021.
“These arrests and charges follow a painstaking investigation by detectives of Counter Terrorism Policing London, who have worked closely with a number of overseas law enforcement colleagues,” said Commander Dominic Murphy, head of London’s Counter Terrorism Policing.
“I want to reassure the public that I do not assess there is an ongoing threat to the wider public as a result of the activities of these two individuals.”
Both suspects are scheduled to appear before Westminster Magistrates’ Court later Tuesday.
