A senior diversity staff member at a British school trust has been dismissed after an investigation revealed she published social media posts describing Hamas as “heroes” in the immediate aftermath of the October 7 attacks.

Saima Akhtar, who served as the inclusion and diversity co-ordinator for the Cabot Learning Federation – which oversees the Bristol Brunel Academy – was terminated following public scrutiny of her online rhetoric.

According to reports initially highlighted by The Times, Akhtar took to social media shortly after the October 7 massacres in Israel, during which more than 1,200 people were killed. In one post, she wrote: “This is an oppressed people standing up and fighting back… Heroes fighting for justice and their right to exist. Palestinians are no different. #FreePalestine.”

Furthermore, she urged individuals to ignore what she termed “media attempts to paint Israel as a victim.” She went on to accuse Western governments and mainstream media of being the “real problem,” claiming they enable “ethnic cleansing and genocide.”

The dismissal has brought renewed scrutiny to the Cabot Learning Federation. The trust previously drew concern when it postponed a scheduled visit by Damien Egan, a Jewish Member of Parliament, last year. That decision was made following threats of protests from pro-Palestinian activists and union members, who cited “safeguarding concerns” regarding his role as vice-chair of Labour Friends of Israel.

Akhtar, who also held a seat on the school’s academy council, had publicly promoted her professional approach as being “intersectional” and “trauma-informed,” ostensibly emphasizing inclusion across various races, faiths, and backgrounds.

The Cabot Learning Federation issued a statement confirming that while they would not comment on the specific details of individual cases, they require staff to strictly uphold the trust’s standards.

“The promotion of inclusion and rejection of discrimination are enshrined in the CLF’s core values,” a spokesperson for the trust stated. “All of our staff are expected to embody these values in their behaviour – both inside and outside of school.”
