A Ukrainian drone operation has resulted in the destruction of over 40 Russian military aircraft deep within Russian territory, according to a Ukrainian security official who spoke to The Associated Press. The strike occurred just one day before Ukraine and Russia are set to resume direct negotiations in Istanbul.
The unnamed official, citing the need to protect operational details, said the complex mission took more than 18 months to prepare and was directly overseen by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

According to the source, drones were transported covertly inside trucks and delivered deep into Russia before being launched. The drones struck 41 bomber aircraft at multiple airfields on Sunday afternoon, including the Belaya air base in Russia’s Irkutsk region—located over 4,000 kilometers (2,500 miles) from Ukrainian territory.
Local governor Igor Kobzev confirmed that it was the first appearance of a Ukrainian drone in the Irkutsk region and added that the device had been launched from a vehicle. Russian authorities in both the Ryazan and Murmansk regions also reported drone activity later that day, though they did not provide additional information.
