British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed strong support for Israel’s right to defend itself during a call with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Friday, following Israel’s major strikes on Iranian targets. Starmer also called for diplomacy to stave off a regional conflict.
According to a statement from Starmer’s spokesperson, the UK leader emphasized Britain’s “grave concerns” over Iran’s nuclear program and affirmed Israel’s right to take defensive action.
“The prime minister was clear that Israel has a right to self-defense and set out the UK’s grave concerns about Iran’s nuclear program,” the statement said.
Starmer also urged Netanyahu to pursue diplomatic efforts, stressing that de-escalation was crucial “in the interests of stability in the region.”
