The United States has rolled out a significant new package of sanctions against Yemen’s Houthis, which the Trump administration described as its most extensive action to date targeting the Iran-backed movement.
According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, the measures apply to 32 individuals and entities, along with four vessels, as part of an effort to block the Houthis’ fundraising, weapons trafficking, and assault operations.
Among those named are several companies based in China that, Treasury said, were involved in shipping military-grade components, as well as firms arranging for dual-use goods to reach the Houthis. The action also targets petroleum smugglers and shipping operators tied to the group, according to the department.
The Houthis have interfered with international trade since late 2023, launching hundreds of drone and missile strikes on ships in the Red Sea. They claim their attacks focus on vessels linked to Israel, framing the campaign as support for Palestinians amid Israel’s war in Gaza.
In May, President Donald Trump announced a surprise ceasefire agreement with the Houthis, though US officials have since stressed that Washington will keep pressing the group over its attacks and smuggling activities.
