The US Department of Justice filed a civil complaint Monday against anti-Israel demonstrators and groups who staged a rally outside a synagogue in New Jersey last year, charging them with civil rights violations.

The legal action was brought under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) Act, a federal statute designed to protect abortion facilities but which also safeguards houses of worship. Jewish legal groups have successfully relied on this law to defend synagogues in the past.

According to the complaint, protesters “engaged in threats of force, intimidation, and violent conduct directed at congregants” of Congregation Ohr Torah in West Orange, New Jersey, during a November 2024 demonstration.

The rally was one of several actions aimed at disrupting events that promoted Israeli real estate in the United States.

Federal prosecutors argue that the protest unlawfully attempted to block the congregation’s right to freely practice its religion, in direct violation of civil rights protections.

“No American should be harassed, targeted, or discriminated against for peacefully practicing their religion,” US Attorney General Pam Bondi said in a statement. “Today’s lawsuit underscores this Department of Justice’s commitment to defending Jewish Americans — and all Americans of faith — from those who would threaten their right to worship.”

Named defendants include the far-left Party for Socialism and Liberation New Jersey, American Muslims for Palestine New Jersey, along with several individual demonstrators.

The filing further accuses the protesters of committing assaults, chanting antisemitic and threatening slogans, and ignoring police instructions, all in an effort to intimidate Jewish worshippers.
