Agudas Yisrael is backing a warning from its partner Degel Hatorah that it will leave the government if Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee chairman Yuli Edelstein does not present his version of the Charedi draft exemption legislation by the end of the day, the Times of Israel reported Monday.
Degel Hatorah officially announced Monday evening that it would leave the coalition. A letter from Hagaon Harav Dov Lando shlita saying that Degel will leave immediately was released as well.
Last month, elements of Agudah voted to dissolve the government due to the draft law, but Degel and most of Agudah declined.
Speaking to the Times during and after their weekly faction meeting in the Knesset, both UTJ lawmakers and party insiders confirmed that both factions of the United Torah Judaism party are acting in full coordination. A spokesperson for party chairman Rabbi Yitzchak Goldknopf, who resigned from his ministerial post after the failed attempt at toppling the government, emphasized that “the factions are working together.”
Agudas Yisrael MK Moshe Roth confirmed Hebrew media reports that Degel Hatorah had given Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Edelstein a 24-hour deadline to submit the draft. Speaking after the meeting, Roth stated that the deadline extends “until the end of the day” and estimated the chances of compliance at 50-50.
In the meantime, Roth explained that UTJ plans to escalate its legislative tactics to increase pressure on Edelstein. Until now, the party has boycotted coalition-sponsored legislation in the Knesset plenum.
“As of the moment, we are voting against the coalition,” Roth said. “Not only not with the coalition, not refraining, but against.”
“If he’s successful in bringing something that we could work with, then we won’t vote against the coalition, but if not, then we’ll also leave the government,” he added.
Netanyahu is reportedly meeting with Edelstein later Monday in an attempt to push him to present the legislation. Should Edelstein move forward with the bill, one party insider said that UTJ might delay its departure from the coalition for about a week while it decides how to proceed.
