U.S. Vice President JD Vance said Washington cannot allow its Middle East policy to be “subservient to the State of Israel,” delivering a pointed message about a key regional ally. The remarks came from one of President Donald Trump’s senior officials and a prominent potential contender for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination.
Speaking Tuesday at the All-In Summit in Los Angeles, Vance described Israel as an important partner in military technology and intelligence. However, he emphasized that the United States would not automatically adopt the Israeli government’s position on security matters.
“We’re going to work with people when we work with them. We’re going to disagree when we disagree. And we’re going to pursue America’s interests,” Vance said.
The Trump administration and Israel launched an attack on Iran on Feb. 28, triggering an ongoing Middle East war. The conflict has contributed to rising energy prices and disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a crucial passage for global fuel transportation.
Last year, Israel’s parliament praised President Trump for the United States’ role in securing the release of hostages held by Palestinian militants in Gaza. On March 5, Defense Minister Israel Katz expressed gratitude to Trump for his “great support for Israel” and described cooperation between Trump and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as “changing regional and global history.”
Despite those expressions of cooperation, relations between Washington and Jerusalem have grown more complicated. In June, Vance cautioned Israel that it had few friends remaining and urged the country to consider the consequences of alienating the United States.
The vice president has also provoked criticism within sections of Israel’s diplomatic community and among pro-Israel Republican leaders. His June defense of a ceasefire agreement with Iran unsettled Israeli officials and weakened his relationship with some Republican donors who support Israel.
During Tuesday’s appearance, Vance commended Trump for being prepared to disagree with Netanyahu when the interests of the United States and Israel do not align.
“Donald Trump is the one president of the last 40 years who’s been willing to say ‘You know what, yeah Bibi’s a good partner, but also Bibi and I have a different opinion on this,’ or ‘Bibi’s wrong about this,’ or maybe ‘Bibi’s right about this from the perspective of Israel, but the American people need us to go in a different direction,’” he said.
Vance further compared the U.S.-Israel relationship with America’s alliances in Europe, arguing that Washington’s policies should not be “subservient to NATO” either.
