Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado said she “presented” her gold Nobel Peace Prize medal to US President Donald Trump during a White House meeting, nearly two weeks after Trump ordered the capture of Venezuela’s president, Nicolás Maduro.
Machado, who won the award last year for opposing Maduro’s “brutal, authoritarian state,” told reporters the gesture was “in recognition [of] his unique commitment [to] our freedom.” It was unclear whether Trump accepted the medal. Nobel organizers had previously stated the award could not be transferred.
The meeting came after Trump installed Maduro’s vice president, Delcy Rodríguez, as acting president, bypassing Machado despite her movement’s widely believed win in Venezuela’s 2024 election. Analysts say her gift was a symbolic attempt to regain Trump’s favor.
Machado compared presenting her medal to Trump with Marquis de Lafayette sending a gold medal to Simón Bolívar in 1825, framing it as a sign of US-Venezuelan solidarity in the fight for freedom.
The White House said Trump’s decisions were based on “realities on the ground,” noting ongoing cooperation from Rodríguez and her team, including the recent release of five US citizens from Venezuelan jails.
Rodríguez condemned the US invasion in a state of the union address in Caracas but indicated willingness to engage diplomatically with Washington, emphasizing Venezuela’s right to maintain international relations while asserting her independence as acting president.
