The IDF confirmed Tuesday that it carried out a targeted airstrike on the European Hospital in Khan Younis, southern Gaza, aimed at senior Hamas terrorist leader Muhammad Sinwar. According to Israeli defense sources, Sinwar was believed to be operating from an underground Hamas command center located beneath the medical facility.

Muhammad, the younger brother of former Hamas Gaza chief Yahya Sinwar, has reportedly assumed leadership of the group’s military wing following the deaths of Yahya and top commander Muhammed Deif in earlier IDF operations.

Military officials describe Muhammad as a key figure obstructing negotiations for the release of hostages held by Hamas. His elimination has been a high priority for Israeli forces.

A second strike occurred in the area roughly two hours after the initial wave, also targeting Hamas operatives allegedly connected to Sinwar’s underground base.

The IDF stated it used precision-guided munitions, aerial surveillance, and intelligence gathering in an effort to minimize civilian casualties. It accused Hamas of deliberately using hospitals for military purposes, thereby endangering civilian lives.

The Hamas-run Gaza Health Ministry reported that 16 people were killed and over 40 injured in the strike. A list of the looked has been released, but it does not include Muhammad Sinwar. However, Israel notes that Hamas has a history of initially concealing the deaths of senior officials.
