WhatsApp is preparing to introduce a powerful new privacy feature designed to give users greater control over who can contact them and how new messages appear.
The Meta-owned platform’s upcoming “Who Can Message Me” update, currently in beta testing for Android, aims to boost user safety and reduce unwanted messages.
The latest beta version allows users to connect using unique usernames instead of phone numbers, enabling chats and calls without exposing personal contact details.
A second addition, found in version 2.25.33.11, introduces the “Who Can Message Me” setting with two options: Everyone, which allows all new messages to go straight into the chat list, or My Contacts, which filters messages from strangers into a new Requests folder.
The new folder lets users review incoming messages before deciding whether to delete, block, or reply — helping reduce spam and unwanted contact.
The Requests feature also helps keep conversations organized and safer, particularly for younger users who may be more vulnerable to unsolicited messages.
Once username-based communication is fully launched, it will work in tandem with this feature to provide an even more secure and private messaging experience.
The new privacy tools will first roll out to WhatsApp beta testers before becoming available to all users through the Google Play Store.
It isn’t clear if or when the features will be available on Apple iOS.
